Kimberly Wise is an extraordinary person. She is a role model who truly
lives by the principles she espouses. I had the privilege of being a student
in a class for teachers taught by Ms. Wise. This was not a lecture class;
Kim simply treated our class of adults as she would treat a class of her
elementary students. In the process, we discovered ourselves, grew in mind
and spirit, and learned the impact that a philosophy of love and respect can
have on a classroom. Kim demonstrated how success in academics must be
rooted in success as a person. Not only did I learn invaluable techniques
that I am using as a teacher, but I am also using these same techniques to
grow as a person. I thank her wholeheartedly for changing not only my
outlook on teaching, but my outlook on life as well.

Wise gives teachers and students strategies to work together more
effectively in both interpersonal relationships and academics. Teaching in
the inner city provides many unique challenges. Kim is an excellent model
for teachers to emulate as they work with their students. Most obvious of
all is the student’s respect for and adoration of Kim. This is so apparent
as she treats all children with the utmost respect. You can truly see their
self-esteem grow. Even our 5 and 6 year old children quote Kim. A few of
their favorites are, “You do what you choose to do.” “Have a great day, or
not, the choice is yours.” She has literally touched the lives of thousands
of children.

In
my 30-plus years in education, I have found few people who are as committed,
focused, and dedicated to children as Kim. Kim has been the catalyst in
making a major cultural shift in the behavior, level of respect, and
interactions in an inner-city school. Based on her research and the subject
of her master’s thesis, a total program of individual control, self-esteem,
and positive discipline has been developed and implemented – all under the
umbrella of cooperative gaming. What a joy it was to watch children become
problem solvers, able to address their situations, devise solutions and then
to actually follow through with the plan. Truly, Kimberly Wise exemplifies
the whole idea of “teacher.”
